Enigma - Open Edition Prints
"Enigma" is a compelling portrayal of a great white shark named for the distinctive question mark (?) on her lower caudal tail fin. This colour pencil drawing on black paper captures the mystique and majesty of this remarkable creature, as originally photographed by Andrew Fox in 2012 at the Neptune Islands near Port Lincoln, South Australia.
In this piece, "Enigma" is depicted with exquisite detail, highlighting the powerful form and streamlined elegance of the great white shark. The contrast of the shark's white belly and the deep shades of grey against the stark black background emphasises her imposing presence and the enigmatic mark that inspired her name. The use of colour pencils allows for a textured and realistic portrayal, capturing the nuances of her skin and the fluidity of her movement.
"Enigma" aims to convey the awe and mystery surrounding one of the ocean's most formidable predators. At the time of the original photograph, Enigma was estimated to be around 10 years old and approximately 4 meters long, a testament to her growth and survival in the wild. The simplicity of the composition, with no background distractions, focuses the viewer's attention on the shark and her unique identifying mark, inviting a deeper contemplation of her life and the broader marine ecosystem she inhabits.
This print has been created from an original colour pencil drawing on black cotton rag paper (2021). The original image of Enigma was captured by underwater photographer, shark expert, Andrew Fox- manager of Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions.
