Precious Existence - Limited Edition Prints
The leafy seadragon is found along the southern coastline of Australia from Western Australia to Victoria. They are listed as Near Threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. They are protected in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Illegal collection for the aquarium trade and pollution from urban runoff are the main contributors to their decline in numbers.
The leafy seadragon lives in seagrass patches, rocky reefs, and seaweed beds in water depths from 4 to 30m. They steer and turn by moving the tiny, translucent fins along the side of the head and move through the water using the dorsal fins along the spine. Their leaf like appendages and swaying movement mimics a piece of floating seaweed which makes them difficult to see for both predators and divers.
I have been lucky enough to observe these precious creatures in the wild. Their delicate appearance and movement through the water is so mesmerising to watch. They can be a little shy to start with but if you remain still, curiosity gets the better of them.

The surface of the printed cotton rag is very delicate and will scuff easily if not handled carefully. It is recommended the prints are delivered to a professional framer. To avoid reflections from the glass, it is highly recommended a clear non-reflective glass is used.
