Australian Sea Lion - Fine Art Print

from $50.00

The adorable Australian sea lions live in colonies made up of small populations along the coastline of South Australia (SA) and Western Australia (WA). Historically hunted for their fur, Australian sea lion numbers have fallen by over 60% in four decades and are at such low levels that in 2021 the species was re-assessed and listed from ‘vulnerable’ to ‘endangered’ under Australian law. It is estimated there are only 6500 Australian sea lions remaining in the wild today.

Currently, the biggest threat to Australia sea lion colonies are gillnets, which are invisible, thin mesh nets suspended in the water. When the Australian sea lions go out foraging for food they get snagged in the mesh of gillnets and drown. The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) worked with the government, scientists and the fishing industry to come up with a solution to ensure sea lion colonies were protected, only brought about by the support of the Australian public. The areas of sea directly around sea lion breeding colonies are closed to gillnet fishing, and now, every fishing boat that fishes anywhere near sea lion colonies has to have cameras on board to monitor what is being caught. This means that if a sea lion gets killed, it now gets reported to AFMA. And when a sea lion does get killed, further areas are closed to all gillnet fishing to ensure sea lion colonies do not decline even further.

5% of the profits from the sale of these prints is donated to the Marine Conservation Society to help fund vital projects to help save our precious marine animals, like the Australian sea lion.

This print has been created from an original coloured pencil drawing on pale blue cotton rag (2022). The original image of the sea lion was captured by underwater photographer Matt Testoni, Port Lincoln, South Australia.

Prints are produced locally using the highest quality cotton rag or canvas with archival pigment inks with a fade resistant life of up to and exceeding 100 years.

The surface of the printed cotton rag is very delicate and will scuff easily if not handled carefully. It is recommended the prints are delivered to a professional framer. To avoid reflections from the glass, it is highly recommended a clear non-reflective glass is used.

The canvas is a textured, 380gsm Bright White canvas suitable for all canvas printing applications. The canvas prints are coated with a UV inhibitor for abrasion and fade resistance.

Allow 10-15 days for prints to be delivered and allow up to 4 weeks for stretched canvases. *Stretched canvases A2 and larger will have an additional postage cost due to their size. Tasha will contact you with the additional amount required once the delivery address is known and the postage has been calculated.
