Devilish - Open Edition Prints
My work is a tribute to the enigmatic and resilient Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii), a creature that embodies both the beauty and ferocity of the natural world. Found exclusively in Tasmania, these marsupials captivate with their stark black fur, highlighted by unique white patches that tell a story of individual identity amidst a shared struggle for survival.
The Tasmanian devil's piercing nocturnal cries and their vital role as nature's clean-up crew inspire my art. Their powerful jaws, capable of crushing bone, and their fierce, solitary demeanor are a testament to their strength and survival instincts. Yet, it is their vulnerability to the devastating Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) that underscores the delicate balance of their existence and the urgent need for conservation.
Through my creation, I aim to evoke both the raw power and the delicate beauty of the Tasmanian devil. My work invites viewers to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of preserving the intricate tapestry of our natural world.
I hope to raise awareness and foster a deeper connection to these remarkable animals, encouraging support for conservation efforts that will ensure the Tasmanian devil continues to roam the wilds of Tasmania, embodying the spirit of resilience and the beauty of nature.
This print has been created from an original coloured pencil drawing on drafting film (2024). The reference image used for this drawing was captured by Mark Kriedemann.
